Policy for the Reduction and Recycling of Waste for Eaton Valley Development

RATIONALE

At Eaton Valley Primary School we believe that we have a responsibility to help protect the environment for both the current and future generations. This will be achieved by ensuring the careful use of energy, water and other natural resources and the reduction of waste products generated within the school. Everyone involved with the school will promote appropriate strategies and actions to achieve this through developing a positive attitude to waste management. Through this it is intended that the school will become a powerful lever and force for change both within the school and in the wider community.


AIMS

  • To reduce the negative and harmful impact the school may have on health and the environment.
  • To reduce the amount of waste generated by the school.
  • To reuse as many materials as possible.
  • To recycle as many materials as possible
  • To ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, to purchase goods and materials that are manufactured and disposed of in an environmentally sustainable way.

APPLICATION

We will use a range of strategies to ensure that the aims are successfully achieved.
We will reduce the amount of waste by:

  • Buying only what is needed,
  • Using only what is needed,
  • Purchasing goods with minimal packaging.
We will re-use waste by:
  • Creatively re-using items safely to extend their life or for different purposes,
  • Where possible, use durable products, refillable or returnable containers, repair or refurbish broken or worn items,
  • Seeking to purchase recycled goods and products.
We will recover materials for recycling by:
  • Providing appropriate recycling containers in and around the site and encouraging their use by both the school and the wider community,
  • Recycling waste paper, card and other suitable materials,
  • Introducing , using and maintaining a composting scheme for food and green waste,
  • Selling on or re-distributing unwanted goods or products.
We will develop the school curriculum to:
  • Include opportunities for pupils to study waste management and its impact on health and the environment,
  • Include opportunities for pupils to creatively explore and use ways to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste they generate,

PLANNING

An Action Plan will be produced and reviewed at least annually to ensure this policy is implemented fully.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

The Head Teacher shall provide an annual report to the Governing Body on how effective the policy has been and whether the aims have been achieved.
